New beer to celebrate history of Cliveden House

THE National Trust is set this month to launch a new beer made in the area celebrating Cliveden's racy history.

Entitled 'Scandale', the beverage is to be brewed and sold at the Rebellion Brewery, who are working in partnership with the National Trust, located just four miles from Cliveden.

Described as being a "deliciously refreshing deep red beet with a malty flavour", visitor services manager John Bignall said: "It's wonderful to be able to support our local brewery by introducing a new and rather unusual product to Cliveden."

The beer's bottle label refers to two of Cliveden's most famous scandals.

The first of the rakish and disreputable George Villiers, second Duke of Buckingham, who was imprisoned four times n the Tower of London- once for pulling off the Marquess of Dorchester's wig in the House of Lords.

In 1667 he murdered his mistress' husband, the Earl of Shrewsbury, who had challenged him to a duel.

The other is the Profumo Affair of 1961, where senior Conservative politcian John Profumo triggered a government crisis by embarking upon an affair with Christine Keeler having espied her swimming naked in Cliveden's pool.

At 4.5 per cent, it may well put some hairs on the chest, but the Trust is hoping it will not cause any further scandals.
