'Football terrace' abuse to parking warden 'scared' councillor

A MORNING spent shadowing a parking warden left a councillor 'scared' and 'intimidated' after witnessing hostility and 'vitriol' from more than 20 drivers in Marlow.

Motorists from all age groups and backgrounds launched a tirade of abuse towards the warden, using language “you wouldn't expect on a football terrace” on Saturday, Cllr Dominic Barnes said.

The father-of-three spent three hours with a female officer to get an insight into the job.

Voters raised parking enforcement in Marlow town centre as one of their top concerns during his recent successful by-election campaign.

About 70 per cent of the commuters he observed dealing with the warden were abusive, he said.

Cllr Barnes said it was an “eye opener”.

Despite being a 6ft tall man, he still felt “scared” and “intimidated” by the level of “vitriol”.

“You have expectations but whatever you expect you can times by ten. There was no particular profile of person, it was all ages and groups,” The Great Marlow ward Cllr said.

“The language you heard, you wouldn't expect on a football terrace. It was a surprise to me.”

Motorists who abused the woman officer, who works for Wycombe District Council, were only being warned they faced fines if they stayed where they were – not being given a ticket.

He said he was shocked by the attitude of a teenager dropping off his mother by the bank, saying he would be appalled if it was his own son.

He said: “I wouldn't want to do it as full time job. I was impressed with the work they do and they are certainly not jobsworths."

He said the officer was a “credit” to her job.

Wycombe District Council took over parking enforcement from police, which gave it a lower priority, in October 2008.

But warden duties are to be handed to a private firm – possibly as soon as next year.

Buckinghamshire County Council is to contract out the service for Wycombe, Chiltern and Aylesbury after schemes run by the respective district councils failed to break even.

I can't understand how anybody could do the job personally however unfortunately the public take out their frustrations on the people doing the job when it should be the idiot Councillors and Council Officeers who are directing them. The wardens get it from both sides, they are routinely asked to disregfard the law and keep issuing tickets despite knowing that they are breaking the law by doing so, then they get the crap from the public.

Lastly, the reason why it is being passed to a private company, is that Buckinghamshire county council have once again cocked up by attempting to delegate powers to other Councils, it has to be Bucks CC that determine formal appeals and they haven't been doing it, despite the Traffic Management act requiring them to.

The parking restrictions on Rutland Avenue around the mosque are fairly lax, whilst around St Augustine's on Amersham Hill (I assumed that's the catholic church you mean) there is understandably no parking allowed on the road. Meanwhile those at Our Lady of Grace in Booker can (and do) park where they like on Squirrel Lane and Ash Road on the rare occasion the car park fills up!

Trying to spin this as some sort of case of one religious/racial group getting preferential treatment is quite frankly pathetic.

I have to call "bull" on this. Apart from the problem that this guy is a politician so what he's reported as saying is open to question: both in fact and of exaggeration. If he really is so sensitive and easily shocked, how did he ever get into local politics in the first place (or maybe this is his first time, in which case it doesn't sound like he'll last all that long). I also suspect there's some pandering to the parking wardens' cause going on too.

The other thing that he should take into account, apart from going crying to the local paper, is that if, as he says, the hostility to parking wardens is across the spectrum and IS as common as he makes out - doesn't that tell him something about the universal level of dissatisfaction (for want of a better term) with the parking arrangements? If on the one-hand he has 70% of the people against a situation and on the other he has a group of officials, doesn't it at least bear consideration that maybe the 70% do actually have a grievance worth investigating - rather than whinging at them for expressing it?

Ha ha, no. I'm a decent law-abiding citizen (who prefers to go shopping in places that have adequate parking facilities). It just annoys me that this guy has taken a local issue that a lot of people obviously have very strong feelings about and made the whole thing about him. We learn a lot about this politician: his height, his children, how "sensitive" he appears to be, yet we learn nothing about what he intends to do to make parking easier. Why can't we leave all the personality trivia behind and judge these politicians by their actions, rather than their fawning sermonising?

I agree with Crissy. My first thought was that if so many people are that angry, then the traffic warden must be unreasonabley strict. This is bourne out by her having a row with someone dropping of his mother at a bank, surely engaging in conversation only added to a potential obstuction which was no doubt only there for seconds.

Yes , why is it that only councillors are allowed to park on those type of crossings ? Sometimes ordinary people or other animals end up with two black eyes.
.
It does make me cross , crissy.

This kind of attitude disgusts me. A warden is doing their job, the system may have faults but it is not the wardens fault. As soon as someone is remotely abusive the wardens should immediately give them a ticket, taking a photo of the driver/car together.

Why is this pathetic? Perhaps these people feel that there actually IS some kind of prejudice going on that is race / religious related? Ever thought of that?
Why just because it is not a Muslim or other ethnic minority that is crying 'racism' is it immediatley shot down in flames by the likes of yourself? Cannot indigeonous people to this country feel they are themselves penalised due to their race and stand up and say so without ridicule? If not why not? Every other race is able to scream RACISM when it benefits them, why not the white Englishman? Is it fact now that this just not an option for him and only the 'select'?...........
.......... That is what I call pathetic!!!

There are far too many overly religious cults about, imo. It was always so and still continues to be so. Some cults are just plain silly.
.
I would have thought that folk have had enough silly cults what with Parliament , MPs and so on for the time being on this planet.
.
Never mind the Hereafter !

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Marlow is not that great. A few nice houses on the Bisham side of the river but the majority of the east side is chavs 'r' us. So I'm hardly surprised they were foul mouthed to the traffic warden. They just don't know any better. People do park like morons in the high street too. Especially outside the Sainsbury's.

Marlow does seem to have a lot of traffic wardens - they are still out at 6.55 pm on Saturday evenings giving out tickets behind Waitrose when the parking becomes free at 7 - a bit mean!
And the travellors who took over a whole carpark for a few weeks got not a single parking ticket - while they were in residence my 79 year old mother got a ticket for being 5 mins late back to her car - no mercy for her!
By the way, it sounds like most of you are jealous of people who live in Marlow - you can all do it if you want to pay the cost of the houses there!

I'm afraid I disagree. Marlow folk, in spite of their faults, are infinitely preferable to Henley type persons. And I do know quite a few of them.
.
Marlow folk tend to be average looking with the standard mix of beautiful and ugly and all stations in between. Not jealous of them at all, btw
.
But People from Henley-on-Thames are unfortunately disfigured by the rather unpleasant characteristic of having two heads.
.
This is caused not by in-breeding but by the fact that people who chose to live there eventually become so far 'up themselves' that a second head gradually (or on rare occasions at birth) emerges alongside the first one.
.
You can spot them a mile off - oh and and hear the two heads talking / braying to each other in that over-weening self congratulatory Henley way - Very similar to Zaphod Beeblebrox in Hitcherhiker's Guide - but without the humour or imagination.
.
Give me Marlow folk every time. The river etc is lovely but I do not desire to live there. Sorry.
