A DAD from Speen will be joining in with a London Bridges Walk this weekend to help raise funds to find a cure for diabetes.

Antony Cox has been dedicated to raising money and awareness of Type 1 diabetes after his 11-year-old son, Tom, was diagnosed in 2012.

The London Bridges Walk will see hundreds walk 5 or 9km for JDRF.

Antony said: "Living with Tom’s condition means that we have to be so organised. If we go on holiday or do something out of the usual routine, we always need to forward plan to reduce the likelihood of issues relating to his condition."

He added: "Type 1 diabetes is challenging, but the main lesson we’ve learned so far is that having the condition doesn’t stop Tom or the family doing anything we want to do."

The 400,000 people in the UK who live with type 1 diabetes - including 29,000 children - rely on multiple insulin injections or pump infusions every day just to stay alive. The condition is not linked to lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise.

Since Tom’s diagnosis, the Cox family has continued to raise funds to support vital medical research into the condition.

Antony said: "From the moment Tom was diagnosed, I have been very impressed with the support we have received from JDRF. They have been instrumental in helping us with our fundraising activities, and supporting the Walk to Cure Diabetes is a great way to get together and show mass support for the charity."
