Princes Risborough Royal British Legion Memorial Hall fighting to survive

MORE than 160 people turned up to fight for the future of the Royal British Legion Memorial Hall in Bell Street, Princes Risborough on Thursday.

The branch's action group arranged the meeting to keep people updated on their campaign to stop the memorial hall's closure at the end of the month.

Chairman of the action committee Alan Turner said: “We have urged people to write to the Charity Commission to complain about the way the whole thing has happened and the sale of the branch.

“There was quite a few ideas progressing where we are going to have a website up and running very shortly where people can show their support.

“We explained the situation that we are going to be working with other branches that are affected to put on a united front against the sale of these closures.”

The Princes Risborough branch is one of nine New Legion Clubs across the country which were refurbished from the traditional legion clubs.

All nine branches were put up for sale last year when HQ said they were no longer making any money.

An un-named buyer – which members believe to be a property developer - bought the hall's lease at the end of last year after the town council put in a bid to buy the property.

The sale will only go through if the un-named plan is given council planning permission.

Speaking about the meeting Mr Turner added: “It was a very good turn out and a very positive response. We shall keep on battling away until we have succeeded.”

There is an open day at the hall this Saturday March 20 from 10am to 4pm which includes a raffle with the top prize of a HD flat screen television.
