A MICHELIN starred chef judged a children's cookery competition at the weekend in Stokenchurch.

Phil Vickery, who regularly features on ITV's This Morning, judged the baking competition at Stokenchurch Dog Rescue's garden party.

There were nine entries and Jake Todd, 13, took first prize with his carrot cake with Snoopy lying on top of his kennels as decoration.

Chairman of the charity, Joyce Marriott, said: "Phil did a marvellous job. The children were so blown away.

"He was so careful and so professional when he was judging the children's cakes, as if he was judging Michelin starred food.

"He gave them all very positive comments about how they were baked and what to look for in cake baking."

Phil lives in Great Kingshill with his wife, author and TV presenter, Fern Britton.

About 300 people went to the charity's garden party which also had other stalls and refreshments.

Visitors could also see the new sensory gardens at the kennels, which were funded by a grant from the Pedigree Foundation and a sponsored walk.

Wycombe based Maritz Research provided the labour to build the kennels.

Joyce said: "As you can imagine, dogs come to us in various states of trauma. Some have been shut away or never exercised.

"In the garden there are lots of different smells- sensory herbs to calm them or make them feel happy.

"There are lots of different textures and a bridge they can walk across.

"When you release them out to new owners, although you do home checks, you can't foresee in the next year how their lives are going to change.

"The sensory garden can prepare them for new sights and sounds."

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue looks after and cares for unwanted dogs before putting them up for adoption.

They are always looking for donations and more volunteers to help continue the good work they do.

Joyce said: "A thousand thank yous to everyone who turned up and supported us. We can't do it without their help."
