11:17am Thursday 21st January 2010 in Stokenchurch, West Wycombe & Lane End By Rebecca Cain
A STOKENCHURCH parish council meeting set to discuss travellers was so full last night that people had to be turned away.
More than 100 residents went to hear what Wycombe District Council's head of planning Jerry Unsworth had to say about the proposed gypsy sites in the village.
The government has demanded councils find gypsy sites in their area and a public consultation into the proposed sites began in December.
A permanent site is proposed at Dry Banks opposite Kiln Farm, Oxford Road for a medium to large site which could have up to 15 pitches and the storage site on Oxford Road opposite.
Tempers were kept under control as acting chairman Malcolm Penny said “We will not tolerate any inflammatory language or unruly behaviour.”
Mr Unsworth said WDC needed to identify sites to meet needs in the local area and were advised from a regional level what numbers they needed to provide.
He added: “Finding suitable sites is quite a challenge.”
There is already a three pitch site at Five Oaks Farm, Studley Green which has been there since 1986 and which Mr Unsworth said the council now need to review as it is illegal.
Villagers raised concerns about any more sites ruining the idyll of the village and said there was no room for any more children at the school which is already oversubscribed or at the medical surgery.
Jack Curtis, who owns the land at each of the sites, said he did not want to sell the land to the council but would be happy to run a private travellers' site by invitation only.
Mr Unsworth later said in the meeting: “The council has got to stand back and make as good a judgement as it can. The council may have to think again.
“If the council doesn't deal with this it loses control so to speak. There is nothing we are trying to hide.”
The consultation period ends on January 29. Go to www.wycombe.gov.uk to have your say.

Remember that WDC are being forced to act in this way by the Labour government.

I've witnessed it.

Never mind bl**dy gritters and filthy unused outdoor swimming pools, this is where your local taxes are going.
