Anger as members discover Loudwater gym is up for auction

AN ANGRY gym-user fears hundreds of people will lose their membership fees after a fitness studio in Loudwater suddenly closed down.

All the various weights and fitness machines at The Fitness Studio on Treadaway Hill have been put up for auction, after efforts to find a new owner have so far failed.

A sign at the entrance to the gym tells members the business will likely go into administration on Wednesday.

Furious Steve Conn, 50, paid £150 for a six-month membership in December.

The High Wycombe resident said the gym took on around 200 new members recently and fears they will all lose their money.

“The first we heard about the closure was seeing the sign up in the door. There might even be people who haven't seen it and are still paying.”

The gym's owner Gavin O'Brien told Mr Conn that another company, which collected members' direct debits, had collapsed and he will face a “huge personal loss” as a result.

He told the Bucks Free Press: “After four years of owning the business, this is a desperately sad end and I am very sorry for any members who will be affected by the closure.

“I have been working with a licensed insolvency practitioner for some weeks looking at various options to continue the business as a going concern.

“However, when those attempts appeared to have failed last week, I was advised to close the business and auction the equipment for the benefit of creditors, barring some last minute change in circumstances.

Mr O'Brien would not comment on whether members would be refunded or Mr Conn's claim that the gym recently took hundreds of new membership fees.

Do people really pay £150 to join a gym for six months? It would be cheaper to go for a walk around Wycombe town centre every day....

I was a member of Gavins gym for a couple of years in 2006/7..i dont believe he is the sort of chap to rip anyone off or stitch them up,i found him to be very professional and client orientated,he and his clients are just another victim of the credit crunch bought about by the current rubbish government

I was a member of the gym from 2008-2009.
Great place BUT it had communal showers and the changing area was not good.
Shame really cos the people there were great!

I was a personal trainer down there for 2 years and its a good gym......simply its just been hit by the credit crunch.

Oh and to the person who was questioning about £150 for 6 months......thats cheap!!!!

I joined the gym last August and paid up front the entire year via credit card. Am I right in saying if I paid for a service/goods via credit card and I have not received fully what I paid for I can claim back the amount owed from the credit card company?

By communal I mean that you do not have a single cubicle shower, you have to share it with other members of the same sex. Sorry and all that, call me old fashioned, but I don't really like showing my all in front of strangers , even if they are all women.
There was one sauna and one toilet.
As I say, it was a fantastic gym in many ways but the changing facilities were a bit pants TBH.
