A FOOTBALL tournament and fundraiser will be held this weekend in memory of an 18-year-old who died last year.

The Alexander Jansons Legacy Festival is at John Hampden Grammar School in High Wycombe from 10am until 5pm on Saturday.

Alexander died suddenly last July from a heart condition called myocarditis, when he was on his way home from a night out.

Parents, Andy and Pam, and brother, Tomas, have set up a foundation in his name to raise a minimum of £80,000 a year for the next three years to fund research into the condition.

The family from Beacon Hill, Penn hope the research will provide early detection of those at risk, early initiation of treatment and improve clinical outcomes.

Patricia Dean from the Alexander Jansons Foundation said: "His father decided after his death to set up the foundation as there was so little known about myocarditis. Every time he went to anybody and tried to find out information he wasn't getting any information at all.

"So he contacted the Royal Brompton Hospital, who are involved in the research."

Myocarditis is an inflammatory condition affecting the heart and is usually due to a virus, but increasingly is recognised to have a genetic basis.

It can affect people of all ages but is most frequent in the young and causes heart failure, sudden death and major rhythm disturbances.

Patricia said: "He just had flu like symptoms. He was a completely healthy, lively, fun-loving 18-year-old."

He had just finished his first year studying maths at the University of Sussex and was a former pupil of John Hampden.

At the fundraising day on Saturday there will be a junior football tournament (U10 to U12) and a legacy football match between Alexander Jansons X1 and JHGS First X1.

There will also be a drinks tent, burger van, ice cream van, afternoon tea, a tug of war tournament, inflatables, facepainting and a kids tombola.

High Wycombe's Nomakhosi, who starred in BBC1's The Voice, will be performing and at 4.30pm there will be a release of balloons, which will be in West Ham United colours, who Alexander supported.

People can buy a balloon and the one to get the furthest will win £60 in John Lewis vouchers.

Those who are unable to attend the day can donate money at www.justgiving.com/Jansons.
