Risk of significant snow this weekend, says forecaster Risk of significant snow this weekend, says forecaster

THERE is a risk of significant snow this weekend, according to a Hazlemere weatherman.

Jim Dale, of British Weather Services, said there will be a real possibility of snow during Saturday, particularly in the evening.

He said: "It looks like on Saturday we have a major frontal system doing battle with the cold air. Cold air is over ourselves and the rest of the UK. It will be a UK wide event."

He said in the West the snow is likely to turn to rain but he thinks it may stay as snow here.

The Hazlemere-based independent forecaster said: "It really is all eyes down for this one and be prepared. I don't want to cry wolf but I don't want to say it is not going to happen."

He said the snow could be significant.

Mr Dale said temperatures will be as low as -5 and -6 degrees Celsius tonight, tomorrow morning and Friday morning. But he said it will not be as cold on Sunday morning.

Too late mate, you have got my hopes up. Deep down I know its NOT going to snow heavily. Met office certainly doesn't mention it...

His theory is sound, and not the first time I have heard this.

The MET usually leave it to the last possible minute to make such predictions, and chances are they will want another 24hrs before making it public, although if they believe there is a significant risk, then the people who need to know will have been informed.

I presume that Jim Dale is related to someone at the BFP. It is blatant advertising for his company.
.
Every time the Met Office predicts snow we have an article about Jim Dale's opinion and a mention of his company.

Jim Dale was in the Carry-On films.
He's lucky to have a second career.

Ivor likes the Carry-On films.

Gets colder and windier in the Arctic Circle, Canada and Siberia. Manages to snow there!

It doesn't get cold enough in the UK to be too cold for snow.
I saw a documentary which explained it and generally if it is too cold for snow temperatures are usually -40 degrees or less.

"I don't want to cry wolf but I don't want to say it is not going to happen."

So basically, you dont know! Where's the story?

Any 'proper' forecaster would give a % probability of the event occuring, even if it is still too early to be able to make a really accurate forecast.

I think the latest Met forcasts are showing this is now much more likely.

Not a very good advert, he's generally wrong.

Jim Dale has been quoted many times before. His predictions are the writings of a fortune teller or horoscope writer. That is, he gives some random statements in a non-commital way which have a statistical chance of happening somewhere within the readership area. When the actual event happens (whichever way it ends up) he can point back to his statements and draw some truths from it. And the BFP falls for it every time!

Perhaps Jim Dale needs to exchange his seaweed for some new seaweed that is more accurate!

When hot air hits cold air, result??

Warm air. Result?

Warmer temperatures. Result?

Build up of air pressure at sea level. Result?

Raising of high-level pressure. Result?

Cloud. Result?

Snow or Rain, depending on ambient static temperature.

Add wind. Result?

Rain.

Not rocket science, is it?

No actually, for many reasons:
In Europe, at this time of year, you couldn't by any stretch of the imagination describe the air as "hot".
.
Secondly when two air masses connect(such as when a cold and warm front meet up) there isn't necessarily that much mixing of the air, so you can't say that hot + cold = warm. All you can say is that a cold front catching up with a warm front remay result in an occluded front.
.
The raising of air pressure doesn't lead to cloud (that's as a result of the air mass's dew point and ambient temperature and the air's relative humity reaching saturation point). If high air pressure were to mean cloud then most days in the Summer in UK (when a high pressure system is dominant) would be overcast.
.
Ambient "static" temperature? What's that? Air doesn't have a "static" temperature!
.
Meteorology isn't rocket science. It's not the work of fiction you've suggested either :-)
