Concerns raised over digital switchover Concerns raised over digital switchover

CONCERNS have been raised about the digital TV switchover and whether every home will be able to receive a signal.

Tony Kaye, 64, of Silverdale Close, Penn said as his house is in a slight dip and surrounded by trees he does not know if he will be able to get digital TV after analogue is turned off in April.

He currently receives an analogue signal from the Chepping Wycombe relay transmitter but when he types in his postcode at the Digital UK website it says he will get the best signal from Crystal Palace transmitter.

But he said due to the trees and surrounding houses he cannot get a signal from there, and neither can he get signal for satellite TV.

A digital UK spokesman said as part of the switchover, all analogue relay transmitters, including Chepping Wycombe, are being upgraded to digital.

He said as long as people get a good signal in analogue now, there’s a good chance they will continue to do so.

But Mr Kaye said: "That is exactly my point. People are going to be waiting to see what happens and then there will be a complete rush."

He said his two neighbours are in the same predicament and they cannot be the only ones. They are not sure what the next option is and he said he has not been able to get a sensible response.

A digital UK spokesman said: “Freeview signals are boosted at switchover and provided they have a good analogue signal today, nearly all households should be able to receive a reliable service with many more channels.

"Households outside coverage may still be able to get an adequate signal, though this could be subject to occasional interference, particularly if there are physical obstructions, such as trees or hills, which can block reception.

"In such cases, we generally recommend waiting and seeing what improvement occurs at switchover or considering alternatives to terrestrial TV like satellite.”

Unfortunately, you won't be able to receive any Freeview channels now, or after your region has switched to digital TV. To find out more about switchover and how it affects you, visit digitaluk.co.uk.

so what am i paying my TV licence for, we have never had a decent analoge signal and now no digital signal either!!

I use sky to get my TV, but why should I pay Sky and BBC for my tv channels, surely the BBC could reimburse me some of my licence fee as I am getting it from elsewhere and not through an ariel.

We will in the same position in Loudwater. We are on the wrong side of the valley as the transmitter is over the hill behind us & our neigbours tall trees block any SKY signal. But we know from previous experience that the powers that be are not intersted in the MONORITY who have a problem. We have a holiday home near bournemouth & had the same issues last year when they went digital. Our old analogue signal was not perfect, a bit fuzzy sometimes but watcheable. Now the didital signal is poor & just breaks up all the time or goes all together. we have a booster & ariel upgrade but still no better. they kept telling us that when the changeover was complete that the signal would be much better but its useless really, Also we are not allowed Sat dishes so no option to have Sky. So we have to keep paying our licence but cannot get a decent signal

Lane End Man, to answer your question, the BBC are the people paying to get their channels onto the Astra satellite, so your license fee is funding this as well. Sky are simply providing the program guide, and allowing you to view it via their box, but none of your sky money goes to paying for the BBC transmissions. You can always get "freesat from sky", and remove your subscription costs, getting the free channels for the cost of your license fee.

Lane end man, You can get sky without paying for sky. Just cancel your subscription and your sky box will drop down to the freeview channels.

People please be warned you do not need a new aerial for this change over, some aerial companies are saying you need a digital tv aerial this is untrue, freeview will work with your current aerial, so do not go through the expense of getting a new aerial were as the aerial companies make a quick buck

This is not news, and their is no need for concern.

There will be more not less channels after switchover, the power is going up 10X on the Crystal Palace TX meaning most people should use it to get their channels.

If you get channels 1 to 4 off a relay you will get more channels on Freeview from a relay.

If you get an abysmal signal on analogue currently you might need to go to cable or sattelite, though most likely your installation needs an overhaul.

People who are concerned should sit it out and see how it works after switchover, or if they are worried consult a reputable installer.
