Wycombe prepares for Mayor-making ceremony tomorrow

THE departing mayor says he has enjoyed his year wearing the mayoral chain - as the town prepares for a grand tradition tomorrow.

The annual mayor making ceremony, which sees the town's dignitaries weighed on a giant set of scales, gets underway tomorrow morning.

Mayor of High Wycombe Cllr Chaudhary Ditta has "loved every minute" of his time in the Mayor’s Parlour as his term comes to an end.

He said: "I have learnt so much in the last year - I’ve been to new places, new organisations which are the backbone of society and meet some truly fantastic people that I perhaps would not have met elsewhere.

"I will take away lots of memories with me from this very exciting year, it has been amazing, I have loved every minute of it.

"I would like to thank everyone - particularly the town clerk, secretary, the Mayoress Jane White and my family - for their wonderful support."

Expect a pantomime atmosphere in Frogmoor on Saturday as Mayor Ditta is ‘weighed out’ during the traditional Mayor Making ceremony to see if he was put on weight at the taxpayers’ expense.

His successor Cllr Chauhdry Shafique will be ‘weighed in’ alongside a host of other dignitaries during the May Fayre from around 11am.

The event, organised by the High Wycombe Town Centre Partnership, will feature jesters, stocks, Morris Dancing and a May-Pole.

There will also be scheduled walks around town so residents can learn about Wycombe’s rich heritage, with face-painting, stalls and an Italian Market adding to the Frogmoor ceremony.
