A 55-YEAR-old man has seen off a lot younger competition to become the world champion in pedal racing for the fourth time in five years.

Steve Slade of St Johns Road in Tylers Green pedalled his way to victory at the Human Powered Vehicle World Championship in Kent in his vehicle, Beano.

It was designed by his boss, Miles Kingsbury, and his dad, John.

Steve has worked at Portaprompt in Sands for about 30 years and it is through work he became interested in racing.

He said: “I don’t think I would naturally go into it. I was interested and they said to me to come along to one of these events and I got bitten by the bug.”

And he took first place for the fourth time, beating off a lot younger competition. Miles also competed with Quattro.

Miles and John have created many different machines over the years, including other world champions.

But Steve said he does not have to do much training for it although he does sometimes pedal to work in a more practical human powered vehicle.

He said his family are proud but added: “My kids think I am a bit of a nutter.”
