Christmas is just around the corner and what better way to get into the spirit than a good family Christmas film.

Wrap up the family in a huge blanket on the sofa, a box of chocolate treats in front of you and a tipple of wine for the parents. Now to decide, as a family, what to watch.

How many arguments start here? What is the best family Christmas film of all time?

Ranker, apparently the number 1 online destination for opinion-based, crowdsourced rankings of everything, has helped to settle the debate.

According to its recent list, the site has the 2003 comedy Elf, out on top as the best family (pg) Christmas film.

Elf, starring Will Ferrell, James Caan, Zooey Deschanel and Mary Steenburgen, if you haven’t seen it, is about Buddy the Elf. Buddy learns that he is not in fact an elf and travels to New York, in full elf attire in search of his real father.

Rotten Tomatoes gave Elf an 84 percent rating and said:

"A movie full of Yuletide cheer, Elf is a spirited, good-natured family comedy, and it benefits greatly from Will Ferrell's funny and charming performance as one of Santa's biggest helpers."

So big was the movie, raking in over $200million worldwide, it was later turned into a West End musical.

In 2016 there was craziness in the candy cane forest when Elf didn’t air on any channel.
