A BYELECTION is to be held in Chalfont St Peter after a councillor resigned to become an army chaplain.

Rev Martyn Groves resigned from his position as a Chiltern District Councillor last month to serve in the British Army.

From December 1 he will be posted to Paderborn in Germany to serve as Chaplain to the Queens Dragoon Guards, having also been the Chaplain to Chalfont Community College and Thames Valley Police.

A former chairman of the Youth Centre and Neighbourhood Action Group in Chalfont St Peter, Rev Groves was elected to Chiltern District Council in May 2011 in his home village's Central Ward.

Four people are standing for election to take the vacant seat.

They are Stephen Agar of the Labour Party, Liberal Democrat David Rafferty, Jonathan Rush of the Conservative Party and UKIP candidate Alan Stevens.

The byelection will take place on Thursday November 15 at the same time as the vote for Police and Crime Commissioner. Polling takes place from 7am-10pm at the Parish Church Hall in Church Lane.
