Aylesbury  MP David Lidington has been handed a top job in the new Conservative Government by Prime Minister David Cameron, it was announced today.

The Tory has been re-appointed Minister for Europe – a role he has held since the last election in 2010.

Mr Lidington will take a key role beside George Osborne and Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond in the party’s efforts to renegotiate Britain's ties with the European Union.

A referendum on EU membership has been pledged by the end of 2017.

He tweeted: “Delighted to be continuing as UK Europe Minister #EU reform a key govt priority More competitive, democratic, flexible EU in interest of all.”

Last week, he was returned to his Aylesbury seat with 28,083 votes – 50,7 per cent of the votes cast.
