A campaign to home 200 refugees in High Wycombe will be debated by councillors tonight.

Hundreds of residents signed a petition asking for Wycombe District Council to react to the humanitarian crisis by welcoming some of most vulnerable people to the district.

Councillors received the petition in October and agreed to debate the motion at a full council meeting tonight.

Campaigners hope to give support to either 200 people or 50 families in the coming months, but during a previous council meeting, leader Katrina Wood said more needed to be discussed about the needs of refugees and Wycombe’s residents before a decision could be made.

In recent months, residents have worked together to send deliver boxes of food, clothes and toys to Calais.

Representing Wycombe 38 Degrees, Dr Stephanie Rybak said there needed to be a show of kindness and compassion.

Members of the public and councillors representing various political parties are all expected to speak tonight.
