Row over extra £2m for Buckinghamshire potholes

AN extra £2 million is to be spent on pothole repairs which Buckinghamshire County Council says must be carried out “as a matter of urgency”.

The council has released the money from its reserves after new potholes emerged since last week’s big thaw.

But the move by the Conservative-led authority was today attacked by a Liberal Democrat as a "cosmetic short term measure".

Cllr David Shakespeare, council leader, said: "Exceptional times call for exceptional measures, and this is such a time, so I will be transferring £2 million from our reserves so we can get our roads fit for purpose as soon as possible.

"We are in a position to act quickly because we have been prudent in maintaining a good level reserves, which we can call upon in times of need.

"These repairs must be carried out as a matter of urgency. The longer we wait, the worse potholes will become. It is imperative that we get these repairs underway as quickly as possible.”

Earlier this month six extra highways maintenance teams were sent out – bringing the total to 15 – with the aim of repairing 25 to 30 potholes per day, and around 2,000 per week across Bucks.

Cllr Shakespeare said: “This extra money will enable us to increase both the quantity and quality of these repairs."

Cllr Val Letheren, cabinet member for transportation, said: "Unfortunately for us and our motorists, the conditions we've had to suffer are perfect for creating potholes - it's been a cycle of freeze, thaw, freeze. We knew that we would we have a problem with potholes, so it is vital that we take action to resolve this."

The council said last week it was already pledging an extra £54,000 to tackle potholes over a three-week period.

But it also emerged it was consulting on a £678, 000 cut to the budget to be spent on potholes next year – a move Cllr Letheren described as “very worrying” (see links to stories below).

But Councillor Michael Brand, Liberal Democrat shadow cabinet member for transportation, said the cash was a “cosmetic short term measure which won’t fool anyone who uses Bucks roads”.

He pointed to Cllr Letheren’s admission last week that council leader David Shakespeare would not borrow the cash needed.

He said: “What is needed is a business case for renewal of the neglected road network through long term borrowing.

“That should mean ultimately that the revenue costs of road repairs are affordable and the roads are decent.”

And he said: “I’m fed up with the Bucks Tories blaming the Government.

“Their financial problems at Bucks are caused by lack of strategic financial policies.”

Anyone wishing to report a pothole should contact the council’s Highways On Call team on 0845 2302882.

They certainly like talking but has anyone actually seen any potholes being filled?
.
I've yet to see any repair work in this area so it's possible (if I'm being generous) that they are doing it area by area and will get round this way at some stage, hopefully before the end of the year....

If they had a spare £2 million lying around it is a shame they didn't use it to do a bit of road maintenance BEFORE the bad weather. It didn't take a crystal ball to know there would be precipitation and freezing temperatures in the winter.

An Extra £2 million from their "prudent reserves", what a laugh. The reserves are built up so that every 4 years they can be used as a fighting fund for the up coming election. Has the recent snow dug a hole that is getting so deep that the fear of losing the next election produces action. So next years cost cutting in road repairs will not go ahead Mr Shakespeare? We await to hear the news on the Council Tax plans. be careful, you may not be able to blame the Government next year. Find the money by cutting the high salaries of senior staff and cabinet members.

Nice one !!
Unfortunetelly Letheren and Shakespeare did not spend funds sensibly in first place .
They failed to keep roads in good repair and pugging with tarmac rather than resurfacing.
Now its going to be even more costly plugging holes again !!!

Just seen potholes being filled in Green Street. What would all these extra teams of workmen been doing if they were not engaged on road repairs? ie what or who is missing out?

There wouldn't be so many potholes if they hadn't chucked down so much grit and salt.

When you leave home early morning in the dark and arrive home after dark in the evenings, you cannot see where the potholes are until it is too late and your car has hit them!

The Council that was quick enough to do a complete resurfacing job outside Sir William Ramsay School had better soon turn its attention to the rest of Hazlemere before we all have compensation claims to submit!

A pothole was filled in Flackwell yesterday. 4 workmen standing around while watching 1 workman fill up hole with a shovel of tarmac. So they are employing 5 men to do the job of 1 man. How very financially viable.

The potholes in Stratford Drive, Wooburn Green, weren't properly repaired LAST year. The problem has now simply been exacerbated and multiplied.
Due to the presence of St. Paul's school, Stratford Drive is used by a considerable amount of traffic and the sate of the road is now disgusting. Come on the relevant agencies , sort yourselves out.

Chucking a bit of tarmac on potholes is of course a "cosmetic" exercise in the sense that come the next cold spell these filled in holes will just start crumbling again.

I bet you they'll never spend any money on bring the roads bringing them back fit for purpose.
The problem is the roads aren't built to stand the heavier lorries that use our roads.
I wonder how many percent of them need digging up and starting again?

OK now there is some money in the road repair pot, what percentage goes to the repair and what percentage goes on the administration?? Who if anyone checks that the repairs are carried out to an acceptable standard?
A little transparency please councillors!

Seen a few gangs around "filling" in the the holes, all they have been doing is throwing a shovel full of tarmac into said hole and patting it down. the tarmac often doesn't fill all of the hole and they never overband them which means as soon as it rains water will penetrate beneath the so call repair and as soon as it freezes again the road will crumble even more than it had already.

So right!

We might just as well throw the money on the tip where the road sweepers dump their sweepings.

BREAKING NEWS! A BCC Highways Maintenance team are currently in my street. However, they are straightening up a slightly wonky "Kill your Speed" sign and concreting it in ( it has been there for years and years). Then they are going to put up a Horse and Rider warning triangle on the opposite side of the road - I have lived here for 25 years and never realised there was a problem. However, I did report regularly seeing deer on the verge near an unexplained accident black spot about 4 years ago. Unfortunately BCC didn't have any money in the budget to erect a warning sign then and it still hasn't been done.

To my knowledge, no potholes have been repaired in this area. BCC certainly seem to have go their priorities right ....
