Princes Risborough Town Councillors criticised for Tory leaflet

FURIOUS councillors have slammed two Tories, accusing them of undermining a town council after sending out a leaflet which said Princes Risborough “town centre is dying.”

Wycombe District Councillor Bill Bendyshe-Brown and Buckinghamshire County Councillor Carl Etholen, who are both also Princes Risborough town councillors, sent a Conservative leaflet to residents which included criticism about the town's one way system.

At last night's Princes Risborough Town Council's meeting chairman Alan Turner said he would like to know what the leaders of Buckinghamshire County Council and Wycombe District Council think of their “representatives absolutely undermining this town council.”

He said: “I find this utterly incredible when we have been working so hard to regenerate this town centre. We have done so much work.”

He added: “We don't need people saying this town is rubbish. We don't need that.”

The leaflet describes what work Cllr Bendyshe-Brown, who is also chairman of WDC, and Cllr Etholen have done in the town.

Under a section called “One Way System- Have Your Say” they encourage people to register their opinion about the system introduced in November and say they object to it after “many complaints from local businesses and residents.”

It says: “The town shopping centre is now dying with at least five shops closing, some attributing it to lost passing trade.”

The £60,000 trial system runs from the Duke Street Roundabout, through the High Street and into Horns Lane and will be reviewed in November. (See links below)

As reported previously Cllr Bendyshe-Brown and Carl Etholen voted through having the one way system but changed their minds in January calling for it to be scrapped.

Town councillor and Conservative Wycombe District Councillor Dennis Green said he had nothing to do with it even though his name and picture were also on the leaflet.

Cllr Green said: “I was never approached by Bill or Carl to be to put anything into this at all which I find disgusting.

“They know what my views are about this one way system- it is working.”

Cllr Etholen said: “Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. It is a democratic society that we live in. I was in favour of a one way system as was Bill Bendyshe-Brown. We have been approached by a number of traders and residents who have said the one way system does not work and we have seen that. We are entitled to say if it is not working.”

Councillor Will Streule said: “This council is apolitical- really we should be ignoring it.” He added: “It is just two misguided Tories.”

Cllr Bendyshe-Brown, who was not at the meeting, told the Bucks Free Press that the leaflet had “nothing to do with the town council.”

He added: “I just don't understand where they are coming from. It is a political pamphlet from the local Conservatives.”

Well i don't care what anybody says, Princes Risborough, is unfortunately dying in the High Street, and this pathetic "one way system" has a lot to do with it, why certain people can't see this, fails me, to tell you the truth, they do not want to end up with egg on their faces.
£60,000 was a lot of money for a trial, that at the end of the day, just kills you off.
You get 2 buses in the High Street now, the road is blocked, is that common sense?, was perfect how it was before.
The congestion with the traffic is going to get worse, it hasn't improved that at all, again, its made it worse.
All these councillors think of their pockets, not the well being of the town.

If they continue to be stubborn, and leave things how they are at the moment, all i can say is

RIP Princes Risborough.

Princess Risborough has already gone. They should just tarmac over the whole lot and allow people to get to where they are heading i.e High Wycombe or Aylesbury/MK.

Good for them, more please, if they have changed their minds and have listened to those they represent, then that surely is a good thing. Why are these other Councillors throwing a hissy fit? Are Cllrs BB and Etholen not able to have think or speak for themselves or those they represent?

I would say that to change ones mind and acknowledge that something you initially supported was not the right thing to do, is very admirable and shows one is made of sterner stuff.

This is all said out of ignorance of facts.
Risborough has been dying for years with good shops closing and replaced with charity shops and empty units, and the whole town was consulted to see if they wanted a re-generated town centre to include a one-way system, and we voted yes.
These 2 gentlemen voted to spend £60K on the first phase of the regeneration scheme then smelled some easy vote gains by pandering to people's resistance to a major change of habits. It was always going to take time for us all to get used to a new traffic system, but the promise of wide new shopper/ cafe friendly pavements once the kerbs have been moved out into the road, attracting shoppers, new shops, more shoppers, more new shops is worth the aggro.
They haven't pointed out that their stance would cost a further £60K to put it all back, at which point Risborough would be back to square one having wasted £120K. Furthermore their leaflet has a total absence of any ideas as to how to improve the High Street, if they get their way we would simply go back to the declining High Street prior to the one-way system.
There are many good people including non-councillors working very hard currently to get Risborough back up to where it was 25 years ago, this kind if stirring for personal gain really doesn't help the town.
This is political jerrymongering, they are just trying to get themselves elected next year knowing full well that things have settled down now and they know they are simply stirring up a hornet's nest, I hope they get stung as a result.

Its like alot of things, "they work on paper", but not in "reality", this system does not work in "reality", end of story.
They should not have put in £60,000, on a trial.

Bringing in a one way system will not, and never will bring life back to P Ris, it was dying, and they killed it with this system, and don't want to admit it.

Princes Risborough always has been and always will be a small "market town", don't make things they are not supposed to be.

For every one that is conscientious there are 4 or 5 who are their to boost their own ego or to make themselves look "better" than others.

And this is what its all about, they know its a waste and it doesn't work.

They would rather make the general public's life a complete misery, rather than to say "ok i've made a mistake".
