Retailers criticised over jubilee contest

TOWN centre retailers have been criticised for not being prepared to stump up £10 for a jubilee window shop contest.

Marlow Chamber of Trade organised the competition and non-members were asked to pay a small fee to enter.

Many put on displays to mark the occasion but did not enroll in the chamber's event.

Chamber secretary Jo Braybrooke said: "They didn't join in the competition, I don't know why really, we can't force them to.

"We were disappointed. The ones that did enter, enjoyed and were delighted and they were good. We had enough to have a competition but we'd have liked a lot more."

The winners were The British Heart Foundation, second were Runners Retreat, third was La Cotonniere de Marlow.

First prize was a £30 voucher donated by Sainsburys.

We had this story a week or two back, and a similar one about Christmas lights. Maybe the C of T isn't being persuasive enough.
.
It is a bit rich for these people to have an idea, expect others to stump up (no matter how small the cost) and spend time dressing their window, then moan when people don't take part.

I am having de ja vu here. Wasn't there a similar competition in Marlow last year and they had to pay to have christmas display competition?

Well good on the retailers who refused to pay. I'm sorry but they should not be made to feel guilty in such a public manner by the organisers going to the BFP.

I think it is very unprofessional for the Marlow Chamber to be embarrassing these shops some of whom may be small retailers who are struggling. It is not just the £10 entry cost but the cost of materials and the cost of staff to do the window because if a shop has only one employee in at a time they need to be doing their normal job not dressing windows.

So let me get this right; Marlow Chamber of Trade organised a window dressing competition and non-members were asked to pay £10 to enter.

What benefits would any of them get for parting with £10, other than the chance to win £30?

Where did the funds received from participating shops go?

This doesn’t sound like a good deal to me, so like others here, I agree with those that refused to pay the £10.

YAWN.... Had this argument before... If we don't want to be a member of your ' gang' why would we pay £10 to play your game? We have a lovely jubilee window we just chose not to give you £10....

Possibly true, but I didn't see any publicity, and I think that the community spirit was free, and not influenced by a collection of £10 notes.

Could you point me at any of the publicity, because I genuinely saw none.

The article you read yourself above with a picture of the winners and a mention for 2nd and 3rd place!!!!!!!!!!!

I am sure the Chamber of Commerce also let all their members know who won!

But the article above was, on the whole, a criticism of the retailers who decided not to participate. And, it was written after the event was over.
Where was the pre-event publicity? Who was to know that this competition was under way?
Who were the judges, and what were the winning criteria by which they would judge?

for goodness sake it was only £10 and we do not get her Majesty the Queen's 60th Jubilee year. Good for the Marlow Chamber of Commerce and the shops that entered. It was great seeing the lovely window displays. Well done.
