Terror trial: police reveal woods search
THE JURY in the trial of eight men accused of plotting to blow up transatlantic flights were today shown photographs of the items found in police searches of High Wycombe woods.
Following the arrests of the men police officers conducted "thorough" searches of King's Woods and Fennels Woods in August and September 2006.
These recovered chemicals including three plastic bags containing Hexaline, a bag of citric acid and several bottles of hydrogen peroxide, the court was told.
advertisementThey were found in a silver suitcase which High Wycombe suspect Assad Sarwar was allegedly seen taking into King's Wood with a spade on July 31 2006.
The case was recovered during a search of the woods on August 9, 2006. It was found partially concealed under leaves at the base of a fallen tree, the court heard.
The Hexamine was in two red containers used to store SAXA salt, the court was told.
Richard Whittam, prosecuting, told the court it was "equipment and ingredients for someone with sufficient knowledge to manufacture HMTD", an explosive required to detonate hydrogen peroxide.
One of the bottles of peroxide was labelled to make mix 11 ounces of'.
Among the other items found were two 60mm syringes, two pyrex conical flasks, a digital thermometer and two glass thermometers.
Mr Whittam said the thermometers were there because "it would be sensible to monitor the temperature of a mixture such as HMTD".
Also, 18 screw-top pipettes were recovered, the court heard.
The items were found after being tipped off by surveillance officers who had been following Sarwar, 27, of Walton Drive, High Wycombe, the court was told.
His DNA was found on one of the flask, jurors heard.
A black bin bag containing another two bottles of hydrogen peroxide were found in a second location of the woods.
The court heard the fingerprint of one of the defendants, Arafat Khan, 26, of Farnan Avenue in Walthamstow were found on one of the conical flasks.
A further four, five litre bottles of hydrogen peroxide and another smaller bottle were found at Fennels Woods.
Detective Constable Peter Tompkins, who helped conduct the search, told the court the area of Kings Woods where many of the items were found "appeared to me to have been marked so anyone could come in and find the area".
The eight defendants include Umar Islam, formerly of High Wycombe. They all deny conspiring to murder and conspiring to endanger aircraft. The trial continues.
