WYCOMBE Wanderers have appointed former England caretaker boss Peter Taylor as their new manager.

The man who gave David Beckham the England captaincy for the first time was unveiled at a press conference this afternoon.

The 55-year-old has signed a one year rolling contract at Adams Park and succeeds Paul Lambert, who resigned last weeky.

Taylor, who has achieved four promotions in his domestic managerial career, was the first and last choice for the Wanderers board.

They went after him the day after Lambert quit and he was the only candidate they interviewed despite receiving dozens of high calibre' applications.

Blues MD Steve Hayes said: "He was the one we wanted and we have turned down a lot of very good people to get him.

"We were looking for stability, someone to pull the club together and someone to win promotion and with Peter we believe we've got that."

Taylor, whose last job was with Conference side Stevenage Borough last season, chose Wanderers above a possible position at Newcastle United's academy.

He said: "I've got so much enthusiasm still to be a manager. I want to be out on the training pitch every day."

And he is a man on a mission.

He said: "I have come here to win promotion. I think Wycombe have under-achieved in the division they are in now and I feel that everybody connected with Wycombe thinks we should at least be in the next division."

Taylor inherits a club in turmoil though.

Some of the team's star players reacted to Lambert's resignation by saying they wanted to leave - and Taylor's first job will be to win them over.

But he says he won't be holding anything against anyone and that it is a fresh start.

He said: "I don't think there will be too many problems on that front."

I wish Wycombe all the best for the next few seasons but have my concerns. As a Leicester City supporter I think that you will have a frustrating time with Peter at the head of your club. Unfortunately some reports suggest that Peter has managed clubs at the top of all four divisions and in the case of Leicester City he inherited a fantastic squad and succeeded in ruining it within twelve month. His record since speaks for itself. The board at Wycombe are obviously aware of Peters track record and have only signed him on a one year rolling contract. Its only just likely that Peter will sign for a second term but I doubt that Peter will be given an opportunity of signing for a third term. However he could always prove me wrong but I very much doubt it.
