High Wycombe should go to town on this

I HAVE read with interest the letters about forming a town council for High Wycombe. I support the case.

The important thing about town and parish councils is that they are non-political and are formed by local people not candidates, imposed by political parties, who often do not live in the area they represent.

Town and parish councils are a corporate body with a legal existence and an elected tier of local government, who are answerable to local residents, which other local bodies are not.

The chairman is elected and is not the leader of the majority political party.

They are responsible for lots of services and the Government is encouraging town and parish councils to deliver more services and Bucks County Council has an active programme aimed at devolving more services to local people.

The councils look at planning applications from a local view and put forward the concerns of residents.

They are residents' associations, neighbourhood action groups and anything the residents want them to be.

If a problem is not solvable locally then the clerk will know someone who can solve the problem.

The local councils work quietly with district and county councils to improve the services provided to residents.

In Downley, one of our district and county councillors attends meetings and advises residents what is happening at a higher level and is very active in supporting the parish council.

I suggest all residents in the district attend a meeting of their parish council.

I am confident they will find it more rewarding than a shopping experience at Eden.

If you have not got a parish council then attend one nearby and then ask for one to be formed, or ask to have your area join a nearby parish council.

The opportunities are there to be taken.

I can see why Wycombe wants a town council and hope that one is formed in the near future.

A very solid argument for a Town Council in High Wycombe. The local accountability that residents would enjoy make it a good enough reason so come on Tories get up with the times and get on with it! Deliver to the people of High Wycombe a Town Council for better local Government of the town. Don't let's have to get a petition which was mentioned in the paper after the Council meeting the other week

Seems even those outside of the town see benefit in a Town Council for Wycombe.
Lets drop the local politics and offer the people of Wycombe Town the chance of developing their own future . From what i hear its the Tory party councilors on Wycombe District Council prevent local democracy

Come on Clarke and Green you have messsed up Wycombe enough with your , constant service cuts, Eden , and Parking issues -- let local people without a political agenda take the lead and make decisions based on whats right for Wycombe Town

Agree with all comments so far on a Town Council being the preferable governing body for our community, this approach far outreaches political ideoliogies and could set considered social goals and genuine lifestyle objectives for the evolution of true community in these valleys. Simply depositing yet another grey concrete and red brick evacuation in the heart of this town has proven that the seemingly permanently positioned Council are lackeys of a quick fix mentality embracing the building of this "shopping experience" in the hope that a dose of architectural Soma will placate the populace. This at least until the tumbleweeds are blowing willy nilly aound the new wind-tunnel shopping experience for 12 - 25 year olds in downtown Wycombe. How else can we help these people do the right thing in our town?

edje
good on you
want to be involved then speak to your local councillors --Lib Dems or Labour or local town community groups -- but not tory councillors as in told Town council is a political item and they are against a town council

Sound advice Town Crier. The people of Wycombe can forget the Tories as far as them seeking to provide a better system of local democracy
