Rye playground is in the wrong place

IT'S great to see that proposals are currently being made for an adventure-type playground for older children in The Rye, High Wycombe.

However, am I the only one who is disappointed to see that the existing playground for under fives is to be refurbished at the same time?

Having spent many hours during the past three years taking my young children to this playground, I am firmly convinced that it is in the worst possible position within The Rye.

A site just a few metres from the busy A40 is utterly wrong for a children's playground, with all the never-ending noise of the traffic as well as the associated air pollution.

I can think of no other town which has its main playground in such an inappropriate site as this. The playground is old and the under fives are in desperate need of something better - but certainly not adjacent to the A40.

As a parent of four and seven year old boys, I would suggest that the young children's play area should be placed next to the proposed adventure playground (which is to be within the trees close to the cafe).

Many parents and carers bring groups of children of different ages to the park - how are they supposed to keep an eye on them all if they need to use both play areas at the same time if they are to be sited so far apart?

I hope that the local authority will give better consideration to the needs of our youngest children - they deserve to have a playground which is as far away as possible from the dirt and noise of the A40.

At the same time they should further consider the practicalities for parents and carers and position the facilities in one area of The Rye, in order to improve safety as well as make it a better experience (how nice it would be to be able to have a cup of coffee at the excellent park cafe while keeping an eye on the children, as can be done in Marlow's main park, for example).

This is an opportunity to do something about it.

I agree. My biggest complaint about the under 5s playground is that it is too far away from the toilet facilities. Children that age, when they have to go, they have to go and many times have I seen mothers or dads sprinting across the Rye to get their child to the bathroom (Near the pool). A lot of times they did not make it in time. Other times, parents knowing they cannot make it in time will have their child do it in close proximity of the playground.

Major consideration in planning, the first priority would be to put the bathrooms much closer to the playgrounds.
