'Ghastly Tesco store is the biggest winner in Eden'

THE layout of the Eden Shopping centre is probably the best that could be achieved, given that it had to be designed and constructed around the ghastly Tesco building.

If Tesco had participated in the development, and allowed its store to be bulldozed, a much more attractive design could have been planned.

The Tesco building, which has always resembled the KGB headquarters, is now looking increasingly tired and dated.

This eyesore stands as a decaying monument to obstinacy.

For those of us who remember how Tesco's objections scuppered previous development schemes, at considerable cost to the Wycombe taxpayer, it is galling to have to concede that Tesco probably benefits most from the increased footfall past its doors.

It is easy to appreciate that young people, who have money to spend on clothes and accessories, think the new shopping centre is wonderful, but the mix of shops is too heavily biased towards that market.

A big disappointment is Waterstones - a pokey shop apparently crammed with the same best-selling paperbacks that you can find in any supermarket.

If you want any other books, they still have to be ordered.

Surely, a town with a university deserves better.

The rest of the town centre has been left as a dismal retail rump.

White Hart Street, with its closed and boarded up shops, looks as if it anticipates the demolition contractors to move in soon.

The Chilterns Centre is now an irrelevant backwater, which only a necessary visit to the Post Office would entice me to enter.

The shop I really miss is the old M & S store, and specifically its food department. It used to be my nearest food shop, and I walked down there several times a week to buy a few things. The new M&S is a much longer trek.

A usefull addition to the High Street area would be a small food-only supermarket.

To avoid being too depressed by the changes, I now only venture into the town centre once a week to visit the banks or to buy a specific item.

I fully agree with the "KGB style Tesco comment" whenever I walk into the store I always comment in a loud voice to my 4 year old son;

"This is how shops used to look in the '70s" – it always gets a laugh…

I also agree that the High Street is already looking like a war torn town - has anyone else noticed the hoards of people congregating outside the 99p store?

Everything that H Garas has said in their letter is true. Wycombe has lost a lot of the vibe it use to have years ago..., at nightime it worse still with kebab wrappers messing up the town

I could not agree more. The new store is a disaster being too far from the real town centre and the range of food stuffs carried is not up to what the old shop had.

The new supermarket opening across the road in a few months will make the food hall irrelevant. I used to be a regular customer but since the move I have given up with them.

The new shop is just a glass and metal shed not in keeping with their image.

Their old shop is still empty so can’t they move back?

I AGREE WITH THE LADY FROM HORSLEY GREEN DESCRIBED ABOUT THE EDEN SHOPING CENTRE IS COLD TUNNEL I FELT THE SAME BECAUSE AS EVERYBODY KNEW THAT THE WHEATER OF THIS COUNTY IS COLD MOSTLY 8 MONTHS IN A YEAR SO THE SHOPING CNTERE SHOULD BE COVERD FULLY AND IT IS A SMALL PLACE FOR SHOPING THEIR IS LESS CHOICE OF SHOPS LIKE WE MISS ICELAND SINCE LONG TIME WHAT I SUGEST ICE SHOULD BE OPEN IN OLD M&S SITE TO DO THIS THEIR IS LESS CHANCE OF FAILIER OF CHILTERN SHOPING CENTRE OTHERWISE NO ONE WILL GO TO CHILTERN EXCEPT OF POST OFFICE NEEDS AND BUYING CHEAP STUFF FROM WILKINSON ONLY.I FEEL UNCONFORTABLE IN EDEN CENTRE DUE TO COLD AND ANOTHER THING I NOTICED LACK OF PLANNING AND FINISH WORK EARLIER WITHOUT COMPLETION OF LIBRARY AND SOME MORE SHOPS WHICH ARE NOT COMPLETED YET AND OLD TESCO BUILDING IS NOT MATCHING WITH NEW EDEN BUILDING.

I can't understand what Waterstone's were thinking when they moved. Whilst I can see the attraction in being in the new development, they are now in a shop that is probably only a little more than a third of the size of the old one, which was in a good location. As a result they can no longer carry the stock they once did.

I agree with the comment that Eden is too heavily biased towards clothes and accessories, something I pointed out on my first visit. You can't force other types of shops to move in though, but hopefully over time there will be more variety there.

Personally, I think the extra walk to M&S foodhall is a good thing. Might make some of the obese people in Wycombe lose some weight. Although I do concede they probably shop at Iceland.
