A tuition service to help Chesham youngsters make the transition from primary to secondary school has been so successful that classes could be made available to pupils in High Wycombe and the Chalfonts.

Ahead Tuition was set up to give year six pupils a confidence boost being making the step up into further education.

More than 100 youngsters have taken part in sessions run by the group during last August's summer break and the Easter holidays That surpassed the expectations of owner and founder Umar Aslam, who now wants to give the same opportunities to youngsters elsewhere in the county.

He said: "I'm trying to build one in Chalfont and one in Missenden, and I hope to roll it out in Wycombe next year.

"Our initial target was to run it for 25 students. We've worked with about 100 students since August, which is fantastic. We've had really good feedback - the kids enjoy it."

Explaining the ethos behind the company - which relies on funding from Buckinghamshire County Council and Chiltern District Council - Mr Aslam said: "We wanted to bridge the gap from going to primary to secondary education. If you're in year six or seven, we provide the opportunity for you to make friends and go through activities in a secondary school environment."

Many of the sessions run by the group at the Chiltern Hills Academy in Chartridge Lane have been taken by young volunteers who have been given training by Chesham-based businesses - giving them a boost to their CVs.

The group has also recently applied to be officially ratified by Ofsted.

Dean Chapman, Ahead Tuition's activity leader, said: "It makes parents feel more comfortable and it shows we are putting the educational side into it as well. You can learn while doing so many different things."
