The owner of an independent coffee shop says he's been given "a kick in the teeth" after hearing Costa Coffee plan to move in next door.

The national chain has bought the vacant retail premises in High Street, Great Missenden, and has already started advertising for new staff ahead of a planned opening in June.

It is next door to Coffee Approach, whose owner Kevin Galvin attempted to buy it before being beaten to it by Costa.

Mr Galvin, who has run Coffee Approach for two years, said he relishes the competition - but questioned Costa's ethics by moving in next door.

The 40-year-old said: "Two months ago I was going to take it on myself, subject to rent, and make it into an Italian restaurant - things like that are needed in Great Missenden - but they got in ahead of me.

"I could understand if they owned a building halfway down the High Street, it's fair game, but it's a kick in the teeth to me for them to move next door.

"There's always room for competition - competition is healthy.

"We've got to stay positive. I do a lot more than them, with breakfasts, burgers and fresh sandwiches. It will have an effect on my coffee sales."

Mr Galvin added: "I hope the residents here stick by me. I have got regulars and the majority have said they won't set foot in there. It's nice having the backing of the customers who are willing to stand by me.

"We've gained the respect and trust of the village, then this happens."

Costa had not responded with a comment at the time of going to press.

The coffee chain had had to submit plans to Chiltern District Council to put up four signs with the company's insignia inside and outside the building before it can move in.

Members of Great Missenden Parish Council have formally registered their objections to its illuminated signs.

Chiltern District Council is set to decide on the plan this month.
