Two men have been found guilty of producing and supplying class C steroids after a High Wycombe bodybuilder died from drinking an industrial chemical “fat-burner” which is not meant for human consumption.

Bodybuilder Sean Cleathero, 28, died in October 2012 after taking Dinitrophenol (DNP) at the Apollo Gym in Wycombe.

His distraught mother now says that the family can take “some comfort” from the convictions of the two men.

Peter Purkins and Jason King were both found guilty by a majority verdict jury of one count of conspiracy to produce and supply class C steroids and King was also found guilty of perverting the course of justice.

Following the verdict, Sharon Ayres, Sean Cleathero’s mother said: “I take some comfort that Purkins and King have been found guilty of these offences.

“I hope this highlights the dangers and deters other people from supplying class C anabolic steroids and also DNP.”

Investigating officer, Det Sgt Paul Quinton, said: “I am pleased for the family that this case has now concluded and these two men have been convicted. I know how difficult the last three years have been for them since the death of Sean.

“I hope this will act as a deterrent to those who may consider supplying similar substances and they understand there can be very serious consequences for all those involved. I hope similar tragedies can be avoided in the future.”

Purkins, 48, of Heather Walk, Hazlemere, and King, 43, of Dresser Close, Prestwood, were initially both charged on September 12, 2013.

The trial at the Old Bailey in London started on June 24. Both defendants are due to be sentenced on July 24.
