A Conservative plot to oust the Speaker of the House of Commons was foiled yesterday.

John Bercow is representative for Buckingham, which includes Princes Risborough, and has sat as Speaker since 2010.

The bid to remove Mr Bercow from his role was defeated, despite best efforts from the Tory leadership.

Mr Bercow, a former Conservative representative, was elected unopposed by the main political parties when he stood for the position of Speaker in the constituency of Buckingham in the last General Election.

He has since been accused of being biased against the Government.

The motion, put forward by Commons leader, William Hague, called for a secret ballot to elect the speaker – which Labour interpreted as an attempt to get rid of Mr Bercow.

Mr Hague’s action was the last of his parliamentary career as he is not due to stand for re-election in May.

Traditionally, sitting Speakers continue in their role after the General Election and are re-instated by the House afterwards.

But on Wednesday, the Government said it wished to change Parliamentary business and introduced a motion stating that a secret ballot should be triggered if anyone shouts “object” when the standard post-election proposal to reinstall the Speaker is made.

The proposal was voted down by 228 votes to 202 yesterday.

In a Vine post now going viral on social media, Mr Bercow is seen nodding and licking his lips as he looks at the Government benches seconds after the result is announced.
