A popular Chilterns cycling event was marred after a cyclist was injured by a car in Chinnor.

The cyclist was knocked off his bicycle after he was struck by a car while taking part in the Princes Risborough St. George's Sportive on April 26.

The car that hit the cyclist then left the scene.

Thames Valley Police confirmed they were called to the scene on Chinnor Hill at 9.23am to reports of a road traffic collision and an ambulance was called.

South Central Ambulance Service confirmed that the cyclist was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital and is thought to have suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Phil Harrison, Southern Sportive event organiser, said: "We were very shocked and saddened to hear that a cyclist had been injured.

"It's a very sad occasion but we want to reiterate that this is an incredibly rare occurrence. We have been running this event for ten years and nothing like this has ever happened before.

"Unfortunately when you have so many different types of drivers on the road, these things are bound to happen sometimes.

"The Chilterns is a beautiful area and very popular with cyclists. Getting people out into the countryside far outweighs the risk of something like this happening."

There is currently no information available about the car, but police say they are investigating.
