A new display of historical photographs has gone on show at a day care centre in Princes Risborough.

Sorbon Estates and the Risborough Area Heritage Society have been working together to produce the display, which is mounted in one of the corridors at the Princes Centre in Clifford Road.

The exhibit is a reproduction of a specially designed temporary wrap that covered the front of the former Birtchnells Menswear shop in High Street while it was being renovated.

The permanent showcase of pictures highlights the changing face of the high street from the 1890s to the 1960s, all accompanied by detailed captions.

One photograph, which dates back to 1945, depicts cows from the Wood family’s herd at Town Farm on their daily trek to the fields.

Dr Sandy Macfarlane, Heritage Society secretary, worked with Sorbon Estates on the original wrap by collating some photographs from his own collection.

Manager of the Princes Centre, Kim Challinor, said: “The display is a real conversation starter for the many people that use our day centre as it documents the history of Princes Risborough over the last couple of centuries. It’s so eye-catching that visitors, most recently the Mayor and MP John Bercow, frequently stop to look at it. Some of our elderly visitors even find the photographs to be a useful memory prompt.

“Dr Macfarlane has such a passion for the town’s history and we are very grateful to him for getting the ball rolling on this project, and of course to Sorbon Estates for funding the artwork.”

Melanie Wills, Senior Estates Manager at Sorbon Estates said: “It’s been a real pleasure working with the Risborough Area Heritage Society and Princes Centre on this project.

“The display looks fantastic and we’re so glad that the project, which was originally conceived as a temporary solution to improving the appearance of the high street for Risborough residents, has turned into a permanent asset which we hope will be enjoyed for many more years to come.”
