John Bercow has been re-elected unopposed as the Speaker of the House of Commons this afternoon.

Choosing the Speaker was the first act of the new Parliament before the newly elected MPs were sworn in.

The MP for Buckingham was re-elected to the role he has held since 2009 without a vote, meaning that no MPs objected to him keeping the position.

After the announcement was made, Mr Bercow said: "I would like to thank the House for again bestowing upon me, the greatest honour that it can confer upon any member."
