An application for 160 houses in Longwick has been unanimously turned down by a planning committee.

The application, submitted by Gladman Homes, outlined a plan for up to 160 properties with vehicle access from Boxer Road, pedestrian and cycle access to Walnut Tree Lane, parking and a public open space with play facilities.

It was rejected by WDC's planning committee who stated that the development would be inappropriate and out of keeping with the village.

Wycombe District Council's Cabinet Member for Planning, Cllr David Johncock said: "This speculative approach from a national developer simply does not work for this village.

"We're sending out a clear message to local communities and developers. We will say no to development where it doesn't make sense. We will say no to 'one off' speculative developments where the local infrastructure won't be able to absorb the growth in demand on local transport and local services.

"But, when we can see that development will deliver much needed new homes for local people and fits into a wider growth plan, we will say yes.

"The message is very simple here. We are the people who will shape the future of this district. We are in charge of what happens in our local area, not the developers."

The developers are now appealing the decision.

The refusal comes after a draft neighbourhood plan was published by Longwick cum Ilmer Parish Council on Tuesday.

The plan sets out a framework to guide future developments in the parish meaning growth will be managed and shaped more effectively.

The draft plan is open for comment until 21 July 2015.

Paper copies of the draft are available at Longwick Church of England Combined School, the Post Office, Red Lion pub, Parish Council offices and Library Information Centre in Princes Risborough, or Orchard View Farm Shop café, Little Meadle.

There is set to be a special exhibition at Longwick School, on Walnut Tree Lane on June 25 and 26 from 5.30pm to 8pm, and June 27 from 10am to 12.30pm.
