You musn't disregard council's divine right!

AT the meeting organised by the Holywell Mead Pool’s Steering Group in the Environmental Centre on October 13, members of the public showed an almost wanton disregard for The Divine Right of Councils. As regards the closure of the pool, this doctrine has been manifested in a variety of ways, each of which was scandalously challenged at the meeting, as follows:-

* 1. A councillor’s words represent the ultimate reality. No other words have ever been spoken. The pool is “a drain” on council resources. An audacious challenge to this was mounted by a member of the public: the Steering Group had always proposed that its business plan to reopen the pool as a non-profit-making charity would relieve the council of this financial burden. Did a mouse squeak?

* 2. Without the omniscience of the councillor, subjects see through a glass darkly. This is why things seem illogical to many members of the public. It is clear that people who currently want their swimming pool reopened will later participate with joy in discussions about alternative leisure facilities without one. Even if they don’t know it at present, they will soon realise they have never preferred swimming to crazy golf.

* 3. Councillors have a crystal ball. If their subjects were accounted worthy of gazing into it, they would see that there are no housing developments likely to result in yet more residents and no Olympics with the potential to lure people into swimming pools.

As councillors gaze into it, they see plainly that, if they were to develop leisure facilities that included a pool, would-be customers would flee.

I appeal to the people of Wycombe to remember that, although their votes put councillors in office, those same councillors must be accorded the privilege of Absolute and Unquestioned Power. We, the ignorant and unwashed, must allow our overlords the freedom to dispose of our assets without molesting them further.

In addition, as they kindly relieve us of the intolerable burden of having thoughts and opinions, we should have the gratitude to vote them back.

Sally C Brocklehurst (Mrs),Pretoria Road, High Wycombe.
