Wycombe boxer into NACYP semis
BEN Smith emphasised his Olympic credentials with two wins in the ring in three days at the weekend.
The 16-year-old from High Wycombe Boxing Club beat a former junior European bronze medalist on Friday before out-boxing the Northern Irish champion 48 hours later.
Smith, who has twice been invited to train with Rio 2016 hopefuls, has a two-week break now before the semi-finals of the National Amateur Championships for Young People.
Coach Adrian Moco said: “Having two fights so close wasn't ideal but we now have two weeks to prepare for the semi-final and Ben will be ready to box whoever qualifies from the northwest and northeast divisions.”
He’ll go into the bout in good form though, after an unanimous points win over Liam Davies followed by a majority decision against Anthony Malanaphy.
Moco said: “Davies is a very technically good boxer and going into the fight had an impressive record of 61 fights and 52 wins and a European bronze medal, so we knew he would be a real test.
“But ben came up with all the answers and broke his attacks with fast footwork and accurate combinations to take the victory.
“The Irish champion was a different challenge all together. He was a tough, rugged fighter who matched Ben's work-rate until the final bell, but Ben just had the edge in quality.”
