WASPS boss Dai Young believes his team will need to improve to beat London Welsh, but says beating Sale with a bad performances shows how far the black and golds have come.

Wasps won 25-18 despite getting nowhere near their best last week, but London Welsh on Saturday and Bath the following week will be sterner tests.

Young said: “It’s shown how far we’ve come in 12 months. We were poor in both attack and defence – that’s probably the worst we’ve been in four to six weeks – but we weren’t capable last season of playing poorly and still getting a result.

“Last season I felt we had to play well to win, no matter who we were playing. I felt we had to be somewhere near our potential. If we were below par I don’t believe we were good enough to get a result.

“Sometimes you don’t play well, but you have to find a way to win and we did that.

“But make no bones about it, we’ve got two big games over the festive period and we have to be a lot better than we were.”
