JOE Simpson says he actually wanted to pass before searing to the line for his try-of-the-season contender against London Welsh on Saturday.

The scrum half ran half the length of the field to burst the dam with Wasps’ first try in their 34-15 win.

He said: “There was a gap when I looked up from the line-out and I went through.

“I was actually looking for a pass but carried on going and I was delighted to get there.

“At that stage of the game we needed something to go our way. We weren’t quite getting the rub of the green and we needed to demoralise them with some kind of score in that period.

“When we got it we were spurred on and we started playing some adventurous and attacking rugby given the conditions.”

His try underpinned Wasps’ first away victory of the Premiership season.

He said: “We know that if we want to be challenging in the right part of the table that we have to win more away games and so it's good from that sense to win.

“We have great support at home and we thrive there but while we have never been that far away from winning on the road, it's nice now to have the victory and we can hopefully push on from here."
