DR Challoner's Grammar School are ranked fifth in the country after a proud display at the National Schools Indoor Hockey Finals at Whitgift School.
A narrow 3-2 defeat to eventual winners Exeter put them in trouble early on, and their semi-final chances went when they lost their second pool game 5-1 to Repton.
However, with the nerves out of the way, they produced their best form and in their penultimate game they came from 2-1 down to beat Perse School 3-2 thanks to a late winner from Duncan Scoot before ending on a high with a 4-1 victory over Egglescliffe.
Scott claimed a hat-trick in the result that secure fifth place overall and the highest placed state school.
