TOM Varndell admits his snub by England might have played a part in his record-breaking hat-trick for Wasps last weekend.

Varndell set a new record for the fastest hat-trick in European rugby history when he raced over three times inside the first 13 minutes of Wasps’ 71-7 mauling of Mogliano at Adams Park.

His feat came just days after England left him out of their Elite Player and Saxons squads despite another glut of tries this season.

He said: “I was disappointed with the England selection, not making it into any squad.

“Everyone wants to play for their country and I felt that my form has been pretty good this season.

“So it was good to have game so soon afterwards.

“I was playing angry and it was good to send him [Stuart Lancaster] a little message and show him where I am and that my form isn’t going to just fall away now.”

Varndell out-stripped the cover defence to tear down the line for his first try with just 95 seconds on the clock last Saturday.

His second came after six minutes when he came off his wing to run home from half-way, and history was made in the 13th minute with his easiest finish of the lot.

Incredibly, his achievement only beat his previous quickest hat-trick by one minute.

That came against Worcester in 2006 in his second game for Leicester, but having set one record the Wasps winger is eyeing up another one before the season ends.

The 27-year-old is the runaway top try-scorer in the Aviva Premiership this season and is now just five away from the all-time record.

He said: “I’m only five off and we’ve still got a couple of games to go. Hopefully this is the season of records.”

Whether the 27-year-old would finally add to the four England caps he won in 2005 if he did do it is debatable.

Director of rugby at Wasps Dai Young said: “You can never doubt his finishing capabilities. If you put him into space he’s going to run them in for you.

“I know he’s quite disappointed because he didn’t get a call-up, but I know he’s not far from it.

“The English coaches have spoken to him and he’s just got to keep knocking on the door.

“I’m really pleased he’s at Wasps and I’m pleased with his form, and all he can do is keep playing the way he is.”
