Wycombe and Marlow under pressure
12:00pm Friday 8th February 2013 in Sport By Alan Feldberg
High Wycombe RFC are second bottom
HIGH WYCOMBE RFC weren’t able to convince a handful of first teamers to swap Six Nations tickets for a trip to Cheltenham and suffered the inevitable consequences.
Chairman Kelvin Hardy said last week he would ask the Wycombe players with tickets to Twickenham to give them up, but none did and without them Wycombe crashed to a 45-13 defeat.
If their situation wasn’t precarious enough before Saturday, their 15th defeat in 18 league games leaves them hanging by the thinnest of threads in South West 1 East.
Chairman Hardy said: “It looks like it’s going to be between Bletchley, Newbury, Swanage & Wareham and ourselves. It’s going to be three from four.
“We’ve still got to play Bletchley and Swanage, so it’s still in our own hands. Bletchley has to be the target.”
Marlow aren’t out of the woods yet either after losing again last weekend.
Their 55-22 defeat to Bracknell was their fifth in a row and leaves them with just a few points separating themselves and the scramble beneath them.
Hardy said: “It’s not just us. We’re not the only team struggling. Marlow are in freefall so there are games we can target.
“And with Wycombe, it all depends on getting the right players out there.”
