NICK Robinson says he was hoping rather than expecting Harlequins ten Nick Evans to miss his last-minute penalty in Wasps’ 17-16 win at The Stoop on Saturday.

Evans had converted four of his six kicks at the posts in the game, but Robinson, who landed three out of four, says the conditions meant it was no certainty.

He said: “I remember being under the posts at Twickenham when Nick Evans had a kick from a similar place.

“But it was different conditions on Saturday, a lot colder and there was a bit of breeze. It was muddy as well.

“They had the wind in the second half but I knew it was at the edge of his range so I was just hoping he’d miss it.

“But he’s the type of player that could miss five and then nail the important one.

“He’s got that class about him so we were planning what we were going to do if he got it.

“I was talking to Marco [Wentzel] and Hugo [Southwell] about what we were going to do with the kick-off because there was enough time to get the ball back and get a drop goal or a penalty at the other end.

“But there was relief when it just drifted wide.

“I spoke to him after the game and he said the ball wasn’t travelling far at all.

“He said, because Quins have a wide pitch, even kicking to touch, he was just trying to find touch a few times.

“Some days they fly off the boot and other days you really have to get through it.”
