Four-day goal glut takes Marlow into three figures

CHAMPIONS-elect Marlow burst through the 100-goal barrier in just their 29th league match on Tuesday evening.

The runaway Hellenic League leaders reached the three-figure milestone for the season with an 11-goal glut in four days.

On Saturday they powered to a 5-3 victory at promotion hopefuls Slimbridge before Ian Davies completed their century of goals in a 6-2 Tuesday night thrashing on Newbury.

Manager Mark Barlety said: “I told them they can be very pleased with themselves because it’s not every year you reach a milestone like that. I don’t think I’ve ever been involved in a team that’s scored 100 goals in a season.

“But it’s a testament to how hard the players have worked and how they’ve bought into the ethos of how I like my teams to play.

“For me football is about scoring goals. We all want to keep clean sheets and be tight defensively, but you need to score goals to win games and I’d rather win one and lose one than draw two.

“It’s about breaking down the opposition and we watch a lot of games and have a view about how best to exploit their weaknesses.

“A lot of it is preparation.”

What makes Marlow’s goal haul – which is 33 more than their nearest rival – even more incredible is that they’ve also missed a dozen penalties this season.

However, Raymond Spence did score two spotkicks to finish with three goals against Slimbridge and Newbury, with Ian Davies (4), Marcus Mealing, Michael Bartley, Lewis Cordice and Danny Linwood accounting for the other goals.

They are now 19 points clear of second before Saturday's trip to Thame.

Thame beat Thatcham 3-0 in the Challenge Cup on Tuesday while Flackwell Heath were 3-0 winners over Shrivenham.
