Rio 2016 hangs by a thread as Sharkey prepares for Euro Champs

GREAT Britain goalball star Michael Sharkey is preparing to face his Paralympics destiny in a make-or-break tournament next month.
The 28-year-old from Wycombe has just been through a tough training camp ahead the crucial European C Championships in Worcester next month, which will have a huge influence on qualification to the Rio Paralympics in 2016.
Sharkey, part of the team that wowed audiences in the Copper Box Arena just 12 months ago at London 2012, is chasing a top three spot for promotion to the European B League and a chance to make Rio.
He said: “Playing in London was an incredible experience and the support we had was amazing.
“But this tournament will be every bit as exciting and tense – we have to qualify and cannot afford any mistakes.
“We have been training very hard and we’ve come on a lot since 2012. We are determined and confident.
“The tournament is in the UK so we are hoping home advantage will give us an extra boost. But there are nine other nations chasing exactly the same dream so it will be intense.
“But we will be going all out to win the tournament and get into the next league up which will put us on the road to qualify for Rio.”
After cheering Michael on, the Sharkeys will turn their attention to his 25-year-old sister Anna who will lead Great Britain into the women’s European A League competition in November.
The European C Championships start at the University of Worcester on September 5 with GB drawn against Azerbaijan in their first match.
