Wasps return to Wycombe for Irish visit
WASPS return to Adams Park for the first time since April when they host London Irish in their final pre-season friendly tomorrow.
The black and golds won 43-14 the last time the teams met in Wycombe, scoring four tries in a the final 16 minutes, but Wasps will be much different from a year ago with a raft of summer signings impressing so far.
Speaking after Wasps’ 31-7 win over Connacht last weekend, director of rugby Dai Young said: “Ed Jackson has been outstanding in the first two games and I thought Guy Thompson showed glimpses of how good he could be.
“Josh Bassett did well last week and backed it up again this week and Charlie Hayter is showing that he is getting more and more comfortable at this level and I thought Neil Cochrane came on and did well as well, so it is pleasing for all of those new guys.”
Wasps have brought in an entire new team during the close season, with 15 arrivals in addition to their promoted academy players.
It means Young will be spoilt for choice this year rather than sending out players who are on their last legs.
Captain in Ireland Sam Jones said: “There’s huge competition and that is great. It drives us to play better and we haven’t always had that recently when we’ve been thin on the ground.
“We have better depth and we are all pushing each other. The new guys are making Dai’s job really difficult”
Meanwhile, there will be an autograph signing session after the final whistle tomorrow.
