Wasps forwards on upward curve
GUY Thompson marked his home Wasps debut with a try on Saturday and he believes it underscores the work the pack have been doing in pre-season.
Thompson, who signed from Jersey after impressing in the Championship, was driven over after half an hour.
He said: “That was my first try and it’s always nice to get that under the belt. It was definitely a forwards try.
“The boys did really well on the driving maul and took me over.
“That’s what we’ve worked on in the last couple of weeks so I’m really happy with that.”
The Wasps’ heavy artillery were also celebrating in the second half after squeezing a penalty try out of Irish.
Thompson said: “That’s our second penalty try in pre-season from the scrum. It just shows the boys have worked really hard on the new scrum laws coming in. To get a couple of penalty tries is massive reward for all the hard work they’ve put in.
“It’s not normally something that’s associated with Wasps, but we’re working really hard up front and we’ll take tries wherever we can get them.
“If we can get our set piece right we can unleash guys like Christian Wade and Tom Varndell and let them play.”
