Hales replaces McCullum as most devastating T20 batter
ALEX Hales has become the number one ranked T20 batsman in world cricket this week.
The former Gerrards Cross and Amersham star has jumped ahead of New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum into the top spot after inspiring England to victory over Australia at Chester-le-Street on Saturday.
He smashed 94 off just 61 balls to set up England’s 27-run victory, and at the same time earned himself 65 ICC player ranking points, enough to leapfrog the big hitting Kiwi at the top of the charts.
Hales also now boasts two of England’s top three T20 scores – and three of their top six.
His innings on Saturday, which included 11 fours and two sixes, ranks third in England’s all-time T20 list behind his own score of 99 against the West Indies last year and Luke Wright’s 99 not out against Afghanistan.
Hales also has an unbeaten 80 to his name, which is England’s sixth highest score in the format.
He tweeted: “Thanks for the messages everyone, buzzing!!”
On Saturday he and his Nottinghamshire team-mate Michael Lumb made light of losing the toss and being inserted as they put on 111 for the first wicket.
England went on to reach 195-5, before restricting Australia’s reply to 168-9.
