Wasps winger poised to top all-time scoring charts
TOM Varndell is poised to become the Premiership’s all-time top try scorer this season.
He is just five behind Sale’s Mark Cueto at the moment, but he’s trying not just to outdo what’s already happened, but what might happen.
His 73 tries places him third in the all-time list. Steve Hanley has 75 and Cueto leads the way with 78.
But the 33-year-old Cueto only has one more season at the top and Varndell, 27, looks certain to overtake him in the near future.
He said: “It’s definitely a target of mine. It would mean everything.
“As wingers we’re try scorers and to have it on your record that you are the top Premiership try scorer of all time, would be fantastic. If I can get it this year I’d be over the moon.”
However, Varndell admits a bigger challenge than Cueto might lurk closer to home.
Christian Wade has 23 league tries in just two seasons, and has five years on his Wasps clubmate too.
Varndell said: “Last year me and Wadey got a lot of tries and hopefully it will be the same again.
“But I’d love to be able to look back and say I’ve nailed that one down and built a tally that even he can’t overtake eventually.”
But while you’d think such a prolific finisher would be an England legend by now, Varndell has been at best peripheral since he won the last of his four caps in 2005.
However, he was invited to join in England training last month and has taken a huge amount of encouragement from that.
He said: “I hope it wasn’t just one training session and off you go again.
“I’ve worked hard over the last four seasons to get back into the position I’m in and I intend to work even harder this year.
“I want to play on that left wing for England. I want Wadey to play on the right and if that could happen I’d take that at the end of the season.”
