Young: We didn't play like we can
WHEN Wasps lost games last season it tended to be because their pack were out-gunned; that wasn’t the case at Sandy Park on Saturday.
The visiting forwards did little wrong against an Exeter team that has grown used to getting its own way against Wasps in recent years.
But for once the backs weren’t able to capitalise .
Director of rugby Dai Young said: “I was really pleased with the forwards. We’re still a young pack and I thought we had the edge in the scrum and challenged them in the line-out as well.
“We were very wary of their contact area and I thought we controlled that too.
“But in fairness to Exeter, they had real bite in their defence and we struggled to get any real penetration.
“We tended to be quite lateral in our attack. We struggled to break them down.”
Tom Varndell was an obvious miss, but Elliot Daly’s injury is also being felt acutely and with Hugo Southwell also missing Andrea Masi has had to move from centre to full back.
Young said: “ It’s not only individuals, we have to look at being more creative in what we’re doing.
“Stephen [Jones, attack coach] is a little bit disappointed. He thought we were one dimensional, no change of angles, nobody coming from depth and that made it easier for Exeter to hold us out. We’ve got to work on that.”
Exeter had no such problems, although all three of their tries owed something to poor Wasps defending.
The black and golds missed a string of tackles in the build up to Tom James’ first try, a handling error from Christian Wade led to James Scaysbrook going over for the second Exeter try and James sped away for their third score after escaping Charlie Hayter near the half way line.
Young said: “When they had opportunities they took them. We’re a little bit disappointed in one or two of the tackles we fell off and you’ve got to put your hand up sometimes and say their attack stretched us on occasions.
“But we’re disappointed in some of the points we gave away. It’s a hard place to come and they’re a good side, but we didn’t play like we can.”
