Q. What did Varndell get for his birthday? A. Surgery
WASPS wing Tom Varndell will celebrate his 27th birthday today by undergoing surgery.
He ruptured his bicep during training last Wednesday and was expected to be sidelined for three to four months, although he could be back sooner.
Wasps also lost Rory Pitman for a similar period last week after he damaged his ankle ligaments playing for the A team at Bath.
Wasps director of rugby Dai Young said: “We’ve had an horrendous week when it comes to injuries.
“We had big hopes for Rory Pitman. He’s worked really hard throughout pre-season to get himself into the right condition and unfortunately he got injured on Monday night.
“Somebody of Rory’s stature would be a huge benefit to us because we struggled with real go-forward in both games.”
Wasps are also without James Haskell, Elliot Daly, Phil Swainston, Hugo Southwell and James Bailey.
Kearnan Myall could be back for Friday’s trip to Sale.
