Bennett provides the fireworks on Marlow debut
FOR strikers joining a new club, that first goal can’t come soon enough – anyone remember Diego Forlan and Manchester United?
Jon Bennett had precisely three minutes of his debut to wait before getting off the mark at Marlow, and once he’d started he just couldn’t stop.
A second goal came after half an hour and two more after 58 and 66 minutes completed the sort of debut that dreams are made of.
Marlow manager Mark Bartley said: “He came in on Thursday and worked really hard at training.
“I thought I could get an hour out of him so I put him straight in and he had the kind of debut you hope for.
“He only played 66 minutes but in that time he scored four goals. He also hit the crossbar, had one disallowed and had a few shots blocked. He could easily have had six.”
Bennett signed from Ascot and his four goals came in a 6-0 Southern League win over Potters Bar.
An own goal and Ben Gladwin effort completed the rout, but this match was all about one man.
Bartley said: “He’s someone I tried to sign at the beginning of last season, but he was quite happy at Ascot having been there since he was nine.
“But I had a conversation with him and managed to get him this time.
“He’s an all-rounder. He can do everything. He can play with his back to goal, he’s got decent pace so can play off the shoulder and he’s also very good in the air.
“He’s hit the ground running, but I think he’s still four or five weeks away from full fitness so there is a a lot more to come from him. I’m not expecting four from him every week but my hope is he’ll get us 20 goals this year.”
Bennett tweeted: “Carlsberg don't do debuts... Great team performance all round, dominated from start to finish.”
Meanwhile, Marlow go to Wimborne Town in The FA Trophy on Saturday.
In other cup news the Blues have been reinstated in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup after Aylesbury, who beat them on penalties in the last round, were disqualified for fielding an ineligible player.
