Giles on the crest of a wave
JORDAN Giles took another huge stride towards competing at next years European Sailing Championships by earning his place in the GB junior squad.
The 14-year-old from Marlow was selected for GB after navigating his way to five top-ten finishes in six races in Cambridgeshire last weekend.
That impressive run of results follow the first round of trials, which took place at the Olympic venue off Weymouth last month.
Giles, who attends Great Marlow School, finished ninth in his first race before drifted out to 25th in the second.
However, a lunchtime tactics talk with dad Simon did the trick and Giles sped back into contention with a second place finish in race three.
He backed that up with eighth in his first race on Sunday and third – after leading early on – and seventh in his final two races completed the set and earned him fifth place overall.
He said: “After the fourth race I decided not to concentrate on the results and just think about sailing.
“My thoughts didn’t seem very organised on Saturday and I was putting too much in my mind.
“But I relaxed on Sunday and that made a big difference.”
Giles is back in action again this weekend in front of the GB coaches, although this is an open event and the first official GB get-together takes place during half-term with a four-day camp in Weymouth.
The squad will be revised again next spring.
